Let’s talk about colors.

Some months ago, I looked at my daughter’s crayon case and noticed that she hadn’t “skin color” crayons but “pale orange” one. When I came to Japan and entered the Japanese kindergarten about 25 years ago, I had a skin colored crayon. The color of this crayon was between yellow and pink, that means the skin color of a Japanese face. Every time my teacher picked it up and told us to color someone’s face with it when painting, I felt strange. Because my friends’ faces are not only skin color but also other colors.

Colors have a lot of roles.

One day, my daughter was looking for her clothes, only pink!! And the other day, she said, “I don’t want a blue ball. I want a pink one!” at the toy store. I asked her why she wanted pink, pink and pink…! She gave me an immediate answer, “Mommy, I know that pink is girls’ and blue is boys’.” She feels that pink is cute, soft and feminine and blue is cool and boyish.

I think that everyone is free to feel what they want about colors. Indeed, colors have a lot of roles and meanings. For example, white is used in the medical field, black sometimes means losing the game, yellow means happy in China and so on…etc…

However, is pink girls’?
I’d like to ask everyone.
This issue is so big for my daughter and me. I do not want her to have a fixed concept about everything. Nothing may rob her of imagination.

Who told her about it?

Answer is nobody. Her experiences in nursery school put the concept into her mind. For example, when she wore pink, her friends said to her, “Cute! You’re like a princess!”

Now, I decided to tell her two important points about color.

1.There is no rule which color you should choose even if you are a girl.
2.One color has its supporting color.

The first point is that everyone can choose the color he/she likes.

But my daughter didn’t understand it at first. So I took her to the clothing space and made her check a lot of clothes. I said to her, “Look at these red and pink clothes, they are your daddy’s. Or, this black shirt and blue skirt are mine. Your daddy is a boy and I am a girl, OK?”

She looked them and said, “Oh…I see. Mommy, you don’t have pink goods at all. And daddy’s shoes are red! I remember that my grandfather had worn red trousers.” She gradually understood how we can choose colors without a gender stereotype.

The second point is which color can make pink more attractive.

I explained to her about complementary and approximate color while showing her some goods. For example, a shirt with pink and blue stripes, a pink and red towel and a bag with pink dots on black. Then she said with her eyes shining, “In case of pink beside black, pink is more attractive than it is alone. Perhaps, pink and red look like friends! Don’t they?”

A few days later, I recommended drawing with watercolors to her. At first, she was so impressed by situation that the watercolor dissolved in water. Second, she got excited when squeezing watercolors on the pallet. And finally, she noticed the fact that colors can be a new color by mixing another color. She picked up and mixed pink and blue on her pallet, then purple appeared. After that, she liked purple that is a symbolic and diverse color for her. Fortunately, her purple clothes have increased their frequency!! She sometimes wears pink head-to-toe, I don’t mind!
